CSDS, as the name implies is designed to provide a quick and reliable visual signal to the
status of active carious lesions in primary and secondary molars. It simplifies diagnosis and
reduces the need for other diagnostic aids as surface probing and radiographs.
In the technique silver fluoride is applied to the active lesion followed by stannous fluoride.
This turns the lesion black; this is deliberate. If the black surface colour remains
it is a sign the lesion is not progressing. If this colour is lost and the lesion reverts back to
brown/yellow colour it is a sign of underlying caries progression .
CSDS’ silver fluoride/stannous fluoride combination are now finding a valuable place in aged care.
